Welcome to the Experiments page

This page features the work of cohort 3 during the summer outreach activity 2024. Two different teams worked on two different experiments, one being the toothpaste, and the other being the orbs

Toothpaste Experiment

Watch an interesting demonstration of a foaming chemical reaction. In this experiment, hydrogen peroxide is broken down into water and oxygen with the help of a catalyst. For these experiments we use yeast as the catalyst, so all of the materials can be found in a grocery store! If you plan on doing these experiments yourself, make sure to follow proper safety procedures such as wearing gloves, protective clothing and goggles. The foam coming out of the toothpaste is also hot, so make sure the foam is cooled before disposing.

The product of the elephant toothpaste is a foam. There are a variety of uses for foams such as shaving and whipped cream. A foam is denoted by a gas dispersed into a liquid forming the unique material. Learn about chemistry and foams by watching the interactive video!

Orbs Experiment

Join Nina and learn how to make orbeez using household items!

Explore why orbeez make the shape they do and how changing the acidity of the solution can affect the color of the orbeez when made with red cabbage juice.
